Purpose: The development of orbita and surrounding region were evaluated with the anthropometric measure- ments in human fetuses during the intrauterine period. Materials and method: The study group constituted 140 (70 male, 70 female) fetuses without craniofacial or other anomalies or pathologies and ages ranging between 10 and 40 gestational vveeks. Fetuses nere divided into 4 groups as first, second, third trimesters and full-term. Nine anthropometric values from cranium and orbital region and chantal index were determined. Studied parameters were head circumference, head width, facial width, facial height, outer orbital distance, inner orbital distance, orbital height, orbital width, oro-palpebral distance and chantal index. Results: There were significant correlations between gestational age and ali parameters (p0.05). New data a e derived for fetal period to evaluate orbital development. VVe hope that our data will be useful in evaluation of fetal orbital development.

Aim: To investigate the effect of acupuncture therapy in obeses on body weight, levels of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Methods: Electroacupuncture applied to 22 women with mean body mass index (BMI) of 34.8+3.3 and mean age of 39.8+5.3 and diet restriction to 21 women with BMI of 34.9±3.3 and mean age of 42.7+3.9. Control group also consisted of 12 vvomen with BMI of 32.2+3.4 and mean age of43.3±4.3. Electroacupuncture (EA) applied to earpoints of Hunger and Shen Men, and to body points of Ll 4, Ll 11, St 25, St 36, St 44 and Liv 3 as önce daily for 30 minutes. Diet restriction was applied for 20 days as 1425 kcalorie diet program. Results: VVeight loss of 4.8% follovving electroacupuncture application and 2.5% follovving diet restriction and also on reduction of serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol follovving EA and cholesterol and triglycerides follovving diet restriction were observed. Conclusion: VVe presume that elec troacupuncture application in obeses rises serum beta endorphin level and therefore possible creates lipolytical effect thus reduces the levels of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, then this may reduces the risk factors at obesity and mobilizes the energy Stores and causes a vveight reduction.

Bilirübin encephalopathy or kernicterus is a neurologic syndrome resulting from the deposition of uncongugated bilirübin in brain celis. Features of kernicterus may include cerebral palsy and deafness. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of kernicterus on grovvth and grovvth hormone. Our research included 22 patients with kernicterus, 18 patients vvho had exchange transfusions but having no features of kernicterus, 14 patients who had only phototherapy, and 15 patients vvho had no jaundice during neonatal period vvho vvere inves- tigated at 21 months old (mean age). Ali patients had complete blood count, urine analysis, glucose, and grovvth hormone. We observed overt neurologic abnormalities in 6 patients vvith kernicterus. There vvas grovvth retardation in 5 of 6 infants vvith neurologic abnormalities. There vvas no grovvth retardation in other patients. Our research has indi- cated that there may be grovvth retardation in patients vvith kernicterus and the reason for this may be nutritional disorders. More investigations must be done in order to understand the abnormalities in grovvth hormone in patients vvith kernicterus.

Mediastinoscopy is a widely used technique in the diagnosis of staging of lung cancer and primary and secondary mediastinal disease. İt was reported that mediastinoscopy was greater than sensitivity of %75 and specificity of % 90. We retrospectively revievved 24 mediastinoscopy performed in our clinic betvveen January 1999 and December 2002. There were 17 men and 7 women aged from 24 to 77 (mean age 57 years ) and the duration of operation was 30- 60 minutes. Eight patients had mediastinoscopy for the staging of lung cancer and sixteen patients for diagnosis of mediastinal mass. İn 3 of 8 patients N2 and N3 disease was identified. İt was suggested that these patients were inoperable. İn six- teen patients with mediastinal disease, sarcoidosis was diagnosed in 5 patients, non small celi lung cancer in 4 patients, tuberculosis in 4 patients, lymphoma in one patient, lung fibrosis and reactive lymph nodes in two patients. There were no complications and mortality in our cases. We conclude that mediastinoscopy is highly effective and safe procedure in the diagnosis of mediastinal diseases and staging of the lung cancers.

We report a 27 year-old man with a history of one year of Progressive slowing of movements, speech and tremors in extremities. Neurological examination revealed cognitive impairment, bradykinesia, rigidity and tremor in the ali extremities. Routine biochemical tests, blood count, serum ceruloplasmine and copper values, liver biopsy were ali normal. BRain magnetic resonance imaginary (MRI) showed frontotemporal atrophy, hipointensities in globus pallidus and substania nigra in T2 weighted images. Electromyography (EMG) showed normal motor and senso- ry conduction velocities but widespread large motor unit potentials (MUP) in cervical and extremity muscles. These findings have been reviewed in the light of relevant literatüre.
